Motorola’s recently launched Droid 2 shows the growing strength of the Android mobile platform as an alternative to Microsoft Windows Mobile, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry, and Apple’s iPhone, and the continued importance of mobile devices for enterprise communications and collaboration. Nemertes projects that 70% of companies will provide mobile devices to their workers by 2012. While RIM BlackBerry still represents the majority, both iPhone and Android support is growing. Among software developers, we continue to hear praise for Android’s more open approach to enabling third-party applications compared to Apple. Almost half of organizations now support more than just BlackBerry for mobile access. As I’ve noted before, a proactive approach to mobile device evaluation, support and management is required. Organizations should develop a company-wide mobility strategy that enables quick evaluation of emerging mobile platforms with respect to security, performance, application support, and management. Don’t forget to work with application teams to understand the potential for leveraging emerging smartphone platforms to improve the way people work.
