Van Houweling stepping down after 12 years on job
Internet2, the advanced networking consortium powered by educational and research organizations, has announced that it’s on the lookout for a new CEO.
Current President and CEO Douglas Van Houweling, after 12 years of service, has asked the board to start looking for a successor. Under his watch, Internet2 cranked its network backbone up to 100G Ethernet, advanced technologies such as multicasting and IPv6, and provided infrastructure to support important networking efforts, such as those involved in health IT.
Van Houweling, who has had a distinguished career in academia, wrote in a letter to Internet2 members, “[Our] shared investment has created a vital resource for our community. Building on that investment, I am confident that Internet2’s largest contribution lies in the future. Working with all of you, I will do all I can during the coming transition to ensure that future.'”
Earlier this year, Internet2 hired a new CTO, Randy Frank, from Fidelity Investments.

Internet2, started up in 1996, operates a national IP and optical network that in conjunction with regional partners supports over 10 million end users, largely at universities, K-12 schools, libraries and museums.
Internet2’s search committee soon plans to release information on what job qualifications it’s and what its timeline will be for hiring Van Houweling’s replacement.
