SQL Server
I was recently testing out the new SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 so that I could give a presentation at my local PASS Chapter on “What’s New with R2?”. The Thinkpads have always been renowned as sturdy and I am sure we all have our road warrior stories. Well, I felt like a glass of milk and for some unknown reason decided to put it on the same table as my Thinkpad. Not a good idea… This is the type of mistake you only make once. The spill luckily missed the laptop but could have been much much worse. We have all seen what can happen. I remember seeing a whole pint of orange juice disappear inside a brand new Toshiba laptop. It made the consultant’s first day a memorable one. Those were the days when a new laptop was shipped out overnight and all was forgiven. I wonder what would happen today? Of course, it’s hard to design against such a spill but just like Volvo in car safety, Lenovo seems to be thinking ahead in terms of “PC crash tests”. The Thinkpad actually is designed to take a spill right through the keyboard with a waterproof channel and two drainage holes in the bottom of the laptop.
