A University of Toronto student has come up with a system for video sharing web sites to better label content and avoid copyright infringement. That’s a big deal given the amount of viewers sites like YouTube get (it had 100 million in October, according to the latest ComScore tally).
The Tiny Videos system, the brainchild of Computer Engineering graduate student Alex Karpenko, compresses video, recognizes duplicate segments and enables more efficient labeling as a result.
“This system is extremely beneficial for users because it can help them quickly and easily find the specific videos they’re looking for,” says Karpenko in a statement. “It’s also useful for copyright holders because it can identify video clips that violate copyright laws.”
