I Want IPv6 for Christmas

There are several things that I want for Christmas. Here is my abbreviated Christmas list: • Peace on Earth • Good will toward men • Increased use of renewable energy • Greater IPv6 adoption

I must admit that these are all very lofty goals and equally difficult to achieve. The last item is the one that I would like to discuss today. I thought it would be interesting to find out what IPv6 technology you could purchase for a loved one this holiday season. Let’s say that you have a relative that you know is an avid IPv6 enthusiast and you want to get that person something special. The obvious places to start looking would be Amazon.com, Best Buy, Newegg, Fry’s, MicroCenter, and any other electronics or computer/networking store you prefer. I was curious about this because I wanted to find products that use IPv6 so that I could support those companies making these up-to-date products. What I was able to find was that there are very few consumer electronics that you can purchase that utilize IPv6. I looked at all the major online retail sites for IPv6 gifts and here is what I found. There are many great IPv6 books that you can buy the IPv6 enthusiast in your life. I would recommend buying one of the following books to get started learning about the IPv6 protocol. • IPv6 Essentials, 2nd Edition, Silvia Hagen, O’Reilly and Associates, May 2006. • Deploying IPv6 Networks, Ciprian P. Popoviciu, Eric Levy-Abegnoli, Patrick Grossetete, Cisco Press, February 2006. • Running IPv6, Iljitsch van Beijnum, Apress, November 2005. • IPv6 Network Administration, Niall Richard Murphy, David Malone, O’Reilly and Associates, March 2005. • Understanding IPv6, Second Edition, Joseph Davies, Microsoft Press, Feb 2008. • Cisco Self-Study: Implementing Cisco IPv6 Networks, Regis Desmeules, Cisco Press, May 2003. I did get one Christmas present early this year. I just received a copy of my own book. IPv6 Security; Protection measures for the next Internet Protocol, Scott Hogg, Eric Vyncke, Cisco Press, Dec 2008, ISBN 1587055945. In addition to books you can purchase one of several IPv6-capable surveillance cameras. These network cameras for video surveillance from companies like Panasonic and Axis are fully IPv6-capable. There are also several IPv6-capable print servers from Silex Technology and HP that can IPv6-enable virtually any printer. There are also many Ethernet switches that have IPv6 listed on their data sheets. You can also buy a Linksys WRVS4400N that claims IPv6 capability. Unfortunately Bestbuy.com had no search results for IPv6 while Newegg.com had the most items (21).
