Members of Google’s Computer Vision Team have blogged about an advance by their group that will make it easier for YouTube users to better figure out what a video is about via the thumbnail image first presented to them upon searching. Previously, the thumbnails were grabbed from the 25%, 50% and 75% marks in the video. But now a new algorithm picks out  more representative images. The researchers point out that plowing through all the submitted YouTube video is a huge challenge: as much as 13 hours of video comes in per hour and of course the content is quite diverse.
