Your boss called you into his office and waved his hand and **poof** you are now a project manager. Well maybe not quite in this fashion – but given budgets, current environments and vast corporate “restructuring”, you receive such an honor. Now you must take this “promotion” and use it for the new corporate infrastructure upgrade. You are going to plan, manage and budget various resources and timelines. This is where earning your MCITP: Enterprise Project Management with Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 will assist you.
How exactly will earning this MCITP help a budding (or experienced) Project Manager? Well, the new Microsoft Office Project 2007 and Project Server certifications are designed specifically to help project managers apply the leading project management best practices and methodologies as established by the Project Management Institute (PMI), resulting in better project outcomes, greater efficiency, and optimal resource management1
There are three tests you need to pass in order to earn your MCITP with Project Server – once you pass all three, you will earn two MCTS certifications and one MCITP certification. The first of these is the 70-632 Exam: TS: Microsoft Office Project 2007, Managing projects (preparation guide availble2). This exam is aimed at those who use either Office Project Standard or Office Project Professional to “build, maintain, and control well-formed project plans.” The second exam, 70-633: TS: Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, Managing Projects(preparation guide availble3) is targeted for those who use Office Project Professional 2007 and Office Project Server 2007 to “manage and support projects in an Enterprise Project Management (EPM) environment.” So the first exam tests knowledge of Office Project and the second tests knowledge of Office Project Professional and Office Project Server.
The final exam required to earn your MCITP is the 70-634: Pro: Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, Managing Projects and Programs (preparation guide availble4). Those taking this exam “might be a project manager, program manager, member of the project management office, or participant in the deployment of an Enterprise Project Management (EPM) solution and be responsible for managing, analyzing, and reporting on projects and programs in the Microsoft Office EPM environment5“
A lot of information for three certifications, but given what Office Project and Office Project Server are designed to do, it makes sense. Project Management is not a simple subject – it is as much an art as a science, as those who have been a project manager can readily attest! Good luck on your tests!
