Finally got around today to check out the new Measurement Lab site launched by Google and some heavy-hitting tech research friends. Or I should say tried to check out.
Ironically, my first few attempts were met with failure. Tried both Firefox and IE. Did finally get in and still found the site painfully slow. Clicked on the “test your network connection” link and watched my blue bar crawl across the screen before giving up.
Maybe this is all some elaborate scheme to prove some point about Internet performance?
As colleague Paul “Buzzblog” McNamarasaid: “This is Google. Shouldn’t they know better?”
The site is designed to give researchers a platform for testing measurement tools on the commercial Internet.
In addition to Google, others involved include New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute and the PlanetLab Consortium, plus researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Internet2, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, Northwestern University and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center launched Measurement Lab (M-Lab).
