The demise of the MCSE is greatly exaggerated. You can still earn your MCSE on Windows Server 2003. Since there will be Windows Server 2003 systems running for several years, it might not be a bad idea to earn it while you can. The MCSE certification is not dead yet (anyone hear a line from Monty Python?), but it is dying. What is assured is that the MCSE is the last server certification that you you can hold onto years after the last Windows Server 2003 R2 box has been retired.
What is clear from the impending retirement of the MCSE is that its replacement is not well known – yet. Have you seen job postings requiring someone to have 3+ years of experience on Windows Server 2008 AND have an MCSE on Windows Server 2008. This confusion is coming from offices outside of the server room and the IT world. This is coming from folks who simply do not know about the MCITP or MCTS certifications. We need to be advocates for our certifications. We need to help others understand that the MCSE is going away and the MCITP is its replacement.
Yes, the MCSE is dying – not dead, but dying. The MCITP is not as well known as it should be beyond the IT world. This is where we step in – let us move forward from our beloved MCSE and embrace the MCITP and help others understand our certifications!
