Rhode Island customers to see 50Mbps downstream
Cox Communications and Cisco announced this week that they have deployed a DOCSIS 3.0 network as the basis of an “Ultimate Internet” service for residential and business customers in Rhode Island. The service will support download speeds of up to 50Mbps, rivaling fiber-to-the-home/premises/node offerings from Verizon, AT&T and other carriers.
The speedy service is intended to support music downloads, large file transfers, interactive live-action gaming and, of course, video. Indeed, the video support is key — Cisco says video traffic growth will account for over 91% of global consumer traffic by 2013.
Cisco’s DOCSIS 3.0 arsenal includes the uBR10012 Cable Modem Termination System and the DPC3000 cable modems. Cisco DPC3000 channel bonded cable modems incorporate four bonded downstream channels along with four bonded upstream channels to achieve downstream data rates in excess of 160Mbps, and upstream data rates up to 120 Mbps — four times the speed of conventional single-channel DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems, Cisco says.
Cox has already deployed Ultimate Internet service based on Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 gear in Lafayette Parish, LA., Fairfax County and Fredericksburg, VA., and Palos Verdes, CA.
