Intradyn sent an appliance for this test – called the ComplianceVault eSeries 4000 eMail and Archival Appliance – along with a Sony StorStation AIT tape library required to accommodate the WORM tape functionality integrated into the product. In addition to the Exchange support we tested, the company also claims Archive One also supports Novell Groupwise and IBM Lotus Notes.

The system is very simple to set up, the same Exchange accounts required for any of these installations are necessary and there is a very straightforward configuration of the appliance itself.

This system is specifically oriented towards creating a data retention policy and archiving e-mail to the tape library. It doesn’t offer mailbox capacity management with nearline storage or policy enforcement, nor does it offer the same level of scalability because it lacks options for creating archives on other storage media besides the internal hard disk and integrated tape drive.

Still, what it does, it does well – it integrates well with the Sony library and makes it easy to create sophisticated data retention policies, allowing some archives to be read-write and others write-only, with varying (even overlapping) retention periods, using subject, sender, recipient, keywords in the content, attachments or other factors to be used to select messages for inclusion in a given archive. The ability to string conditions together to create extremely selective policies is not unique, but is more fluid than most.

The ComplianceVault includes an Outlook plug-in for searching and accessing archived messages. The ComplianceVault eSeries 4000 is not the do-everything product that some of the other products seem to be, but it is very easy to install and run and offers excellent integration with the library.
