Bad times good for data warehousing

Despite the current financial crisis in the U.S. and other key global markets, data warehousing firm Teradata sees greater demand for data warehousing and business intelligence solutions.

“When times are bad, data is more important to make good business decisions,” said Teradata area vice-president Dennis Samuel in a media briefing last week. Samuel said companies have become more reliant on data to not only guide their strategic directions but also to drive their daily operational decisions.

He added that enterprises are increasingly looking to integrate and centralize data to reduce costs and get a complete view of their customers, products, risks and financials.

Economic downturn will affect IT sourcing options

Teradata announced that it has opened an office in the Philippines and has appointed Lyndon Lacanienta as country manager.

“The market outlook for companies in the Philippines is promising despite global economic pressures, and the regional need for enterprise-class intelligence is strong, Teradata is uniquely positioned to offer local companies everything needed to get started in data warehousing, including the Teradata Database, a Teradata platform, software and consulting services,” Samuel said.

Three major clients pave Teradata’s formal entry into the Philippine market. Flag carrier Philippine Airlines is the first local client of the data-warehousing firm. The other two clients are big players in the retail space but Teradata officials declined to disclose their names yet.

Although the Philippine office is starting with a lean team, country manager Lacanienta said the plan is to grow the organization as business demand picks up. Teradata Philippines is currently building resources for customer support, sales, and management consulting. It has also appointed system integrator Remax as its Philippine partner.

Lacanienta sees big market potentials in the telecommunications sector. He also noted that Teradata offers a range of solutions geared for the small and medium enterprises. Markets where Teradata is strong worldwide include communications, media and entertainment, financial services, insurance, retail, government and public services, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, hospitality, gaming, travel and transportation.

Present in more than 60 countries, Teradata boasts of more than 850 customers and over 2000 implementations.
