Sierra Wireless has released a USB laptop modem for Sprint’s EV-DO Rev A cellular data network.
The 598U modem is aimed at offering mobile consumers and workers high-speed cellular data services wherever a connection to the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network service is available. On the Rev A wireless links, Sprint promises an average download speeds of 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps and upload speeds averaging 350K to 500Kbps.
The modem also is compatible with Sprint EV-DO Rev 0 and 1XRTT where Rev A coverage is not available.
Also part of the 598U: Sierra Wireless’ Tru-Locate technology, which incorporates a a GPS antenna, to integrate location coordinates with online and third-party location and navigation programs; and a microSD expansion slot, which can support up to 32GB for backup, file transfers and memory-demanding presentation, image, music and video files. The modem includes Sprint’s SmartView automatic installation program, for both Mac and Windows PCs. The program self-installs when the modem is plugged, and manages a hands-free activation on the Sprint networks.
The device measures 0.9 x 3.1 x 0.44 inches and weighs 0.75 ounces. It works with laptops running Windows Vista, XP SP2, and 2000; Mac OS X 10.4.11 or newer; and Linux.
The 598U is available via Sprint’s retail outlets and online site. Normally priced at $249, Sprint is currently offering it for free, if you order online with a two-year contract.
