Celtel International is rolling out an EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) service in Ghana.
The announcement was made at the same time that Celtel Ghana Holdings said it will begin operating as Zain Communications Ghana. Along with that change, Philip Sowah was appointed the country manager of the Ghana operation, said Zain CEO Saad Al Barrak.
“We are very excited to enter Ghana, one of the most important markets in Africa. We look forward to offering Ghanaians the quality telecommunications services which we provide in all the countries in which we operate. Based on our pan-African experience, we are confident that the increased competition in telecommunications will benefit the people of Ghana and support the already robust national economy of the country,” he said.
Zain will invest undisclosed millions of dollars in a state-of-the art telecommunications network and associated services with the aim of reaching more than 24 million customers. With Westel acquisition and the move into Ghana, Zain will operate in 15 African countries.
