The German Technical Corporation (GTZ) has donated US$91,984 worth of computer equipment to the prosecutor general of Rwanda’s office in Kimihurura, Kigali. The donation includes 30 laptops, four printers and a projector.

“GTZ started with building up a database for the Gacaca court program at its inception, but we have since widened our operations with the office and are looking forward to giving more support,” said Mathias Muhlhans, the GTZ principal adviser on justice and good governance.

Gacaca is a traditional judicial system that was employed to deal with genocide crimes in Rwanda, decrease the congestion of jails and ease the burden on the UN tribunal in Arusha, Tanzania.

“Every worker should have a laptop, and so far, we have achieved 30 percent,” said Deputy Prosecutor General Alphonse Hitiyaremye. “The 30 laptops and other equipment donated to us by our partners will immensely help us realize our target and improve our services.”

GTZ has had a 14-year working relationship with the Office of the Prosecutor General in various legal programs, policy reforms and decentralization of these reforms at all administrative levels, explained Muhlhans.

The company began operations in Rwanda in 1994. Its contract is scheduled to end in 2011 but will likely be extended.
