Celtel Kenya has signed a special agreement with Magadi Soda Company, which enables company employees to access services at reduced rates.

The agreement allows Celtel to erect base stations in Magadi, a company engaged in mining soda ash. The masts will also serve the surrounding areas.

“Given the unusual geological and geographical nature, Celtel saw a need to improve communication in Magadi,” said Amon Jere, Celtel Kenya sales director.

Under the partnership, Magadi Soda staff will now be able to make calls and use data service at preferential rates.

“Through our network platform, Magadi Soda will now be able to exploit the advantages of cross-border business,” said Michael Okwiri, Celtel corporate communications director.

Celtel, which offers services in 17 African countries, has been engaged in a vigorous marketing campaign aimed at capturing a sizeable market segment ahead of entry by two other mobile service providers — Econet Wireless and Orange.

Last week, Celtel announced a capital injection of 25 billion Kenyan shillings (US$380.8 million) into the business for product development and expansion of its network coverage, which currently stands at 88 percent.
