AirTight's basic service covers round-the-clock wireless scanning and monitoring for intruders
AirTight’s SpectraGuard wireless intrusion prevention software is now available as a monthly online service. Wi-Fi spectrum is monitored by plug-and-play radio sensors installed at the customer’s site.
Starting now, you no longer have to buy a software application to monitor your enterprise wireless LAN. You can just rent one online.
AirTight Networks this week unveiled a software-as-a-service version of its SpectraGuard Enterprise WLAN intrusion monitoring and prevention application, called SpectraGuard Online. Users still have to plug in preconfigured AirTight radio frequency sensors at their site. But the data these sensors collect is sent to servers at a hosting facility, where it’s processed for the customer’s network administrators.
The goal is to make WLAN intrusion prevention more affordable and easier to deploy for companies of all sizes, according to executives for the company. The basic SpectraGuard software is unchanged, but there are some coding changes to minimize delay in the wide-area connection between the hosted data center and the customer site.
AirTight is one of several vendors offering enterprise software that constantly monitors the Wi-Fi spectrum, usually with a network of RF sensors, for radios trying to connect to the WLAN or to users on it. Some vendors are small specialty vendors such as AirTight and AirDefense. Other WLAN vendors, such as Aruba, often include some intrusion detection/prevention features, either their own or under license from an OEM. (Compare wireless LAN security products.)
While managed services for WLANs have been around for several years, separate security services are rarer. VeriSign partnered with AirMagnet in 2007 to launch a managed wireless security service for intrusion prevention.
Based on data from the sensors, AirTight’s SpectraGuard technology can detect radio activity, classify different threats and rate their severity, apply a range of enterprise usage and security policies, and block wireless connections. The sensors also can locate radio devices, and display in floor plans a coverage map of access points, and of the AirTight sensors, so users can see any gaps between the two.
AirTight has unbundled SpectraGuard’s capabilities and made them available in two different services: one for monitoring and detection, one for countering and blocking detected threats. The unbundling lowers the cost and complexity for users to deploy WLAN protection, and lets them choose only the capabilities they need, according to AirTight executives.
The basic service covers round-the-clock wireless scanning and monitoring for intruders. Included with this is a regulatory compliance application, which maps any of the identified vulnerabilities against the requirements of security standards such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Both software modules include a battery of scheduled and on-demand reports.
The second service is for remediation. Once a network intruder is detected, this feature can block or isolate the radio. Users can start with the monitoring service, and add the remediation service; AirTight simply activates a software ‘key’ in the hosted data center to add this service.
The charges for the services are based on the number of AirTight sensors deployed by the customer. Because the sensors are only receiving, not transmitting, each one can cover approximately 20,000 square feet, though that varies based on many factors such as what construction materials are used in the building. Customers simply plug the preconfigured sensors into Ethernet ports, powering them with either a nearby electric outlet or Power-over-Ethernet. The AirTight discovery protocol in effect phones home to the hosted data center to register and set up a secure connection.
Users of SpectraGuard Online pay two fees. One is a leasing fee for each sensor installed at the customer site: $12.50 per sensor per month. The second is, in effect, a monthly usage fee. The monitoring service with compliance tool is $50 per sensor per month. The remediation service is another $50 per sensor per month.
A 10-sensor deployment would add up to a monthly cost of $125 in sensor leases, plus $500 for either of the two online services (or $1,000 for both).
The fee includes 24-hour customer support, and automatic software upgrades. Network administrators access SpectraGuard Online’s GUI and reports via a Web browser.
The AirTight software, and the customer data it collects, is housed in a hosted facility designed to be physically and electronically secure. AirTight uses a “multi-tenant architecture,” meaning a single software instance can serve numerous customers while still keeping their data securely segregated. Otherwise, AirTight would have to deploy a separate instance for each customer.
