The chief commercial officer for Celtel Nigeria, Michael Foley, has been named the new managing director of Celtel Tanzania.

Foley takes over from Bashar Arafeh, who has been elevated to the post of chief operating officer for Celtel East Africa Region with responsibility for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Madagascar, according to Celtel Nigeria spokesman Emmanuel Otokhine.

Celtel was launched on the continent in November 2001 and was the fifth entrant into the highly competitive cellular market in Tanzania. It claims leading coverage in the country as a mobile operator.

Foley, 47, has more than 25 years of experience in telecommunications and marketing. Celtel Nigeria is the largest operation in the Celtel International Group. Over the past 12 months, the Nigerian operation added more than 5 million clients, increased nine points in market share and regained the number two position in the market, according to the company.
