* Infonetics says IP router sales' increase is rare for the first quarter
Infonetics Research this week is reporting that IP router sales were up in the first three months of this year, in a time that is usually down.
The market research firm said sales of most service provider routers and switches were down in the first quarter, as would be expected in a first quarter. Worldwide service provider router and switch revenue was $3 billion in the first quarter, which was down 1% from the fourth quarter of 2007. The market was $11.2 billion for the full year of 2007.
But IP router sales were up 6%. IP core and edge router revenue was up 27% over the course of 2007. And if you look at year-over-year numbers, the revenue for that market segment rose 35% from the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008 (Compare Enterprise Core Router products).
Infonetics says that most IP router sales are coming from North America and Europe, though Asia Pacific and Central and Latin America also saw “healthy gains.”
Cisco and Juniper are the top two vendors in the overall market, which includes IP routers, carrier Ethernet switches and ATM switches. They each gained a point in worldwide revenue market share, according to Infonetics.
ATM switch sales fell 29% from one quarter to the next, so that star continues to fade, just in case you were wondering. No shock there.
Cisco gained 6% of the market for carrier Ethernet switches, a market that was down 11% overall. Huawei was second and Hitachi Cable claimed the third spot.
