Infocom Limited, Uganda’s largest ISP (Internet service provider), is set to introduce SpeedMAX – a low-end wireless broadband connection that will not guarantee users speed but, rather, wider access.

“With SpeedMAX, you will have access while on the move; you can connect through your laptop, desktop PC, PDA or smartphone and browse the Internet,” Hans Haerdtle, Infocom’s managing director, told IDG.

Barbara Nanono, Infocom’s sales and administrative manager, said the service will be launched within the next few days.

“Access points to the service are all around greater Kampala, so users interested in the service should not worry about access issues,” Nanono said.

In recent years, ISPs have established Wi-Fi hotspots in increasing numbers at public venues, providing local coverage for users on the move and enabling them to access e-mail, the Web and other Internet applications.

While WiFi services are free in some cases, Infocom’s new offering will cost about US$61 per month for use on a laptop or PDA. Service on a desktop PC requires a booster and, therefore, will cost about US$65 per month. Nonmonthly subscribers will be able to purchase WiFi scratch cards, similar to mobile phone credits, to access the Internet.

Infocom introduced WiFi to the Uganda market in 2005, when it launched 16 hotspots in and around Kampala. The ISP has since expanded its WiFi network, allowing for SpeedMAX’s operation.

“I cannot guarantee Internet speeds right now, but all I can say is that SpeedMAX offers wider coverage,” Nanono said.
