Acrobat’s to blame for Windows XP error message

I keep getting an error message pop up on my Windows XP system that says, “You must restart your system before you can do another update.” It does not indicate what program is throwing the error or what update it is referring to. How can I make this go away?

This sounds like a problem with Adobe Acrobat. I ran into this myself after the program prompted for an update and I installed it. The error message you describe started popping up over and over again. Another symptom of this Adobe error is a Windows Explorer window opening up to the Adobe folder every time you restart your computer. To make the error message go away you can start by going into the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel and choosing the Adobe Acrobat item and clicking the Remove/Modify button and selecting the Repair option when the Adobe wizard starts up. If that does not solve the problem, Adobe recommends starting Acrobat and updating from the Help menu. That will simply bring up the same error message about not being able to install another update. Farther down in the same Adobe knowledge base article are instructions for editing the registry and removing the updateMgr entry from the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun registry key. If using the repair option in the Add/Remove programs Adobe wizard does not fix the error, using regedit to delete updateMgr entry from the CurrentVersionRun key under HKEY_CURRENT_USERS in the Windows registry should take care of the problem and stop the error alert from popping up.
