The European Commission gave German technology companies Infineon Technologies and Siemens the go-ahead Thursday to form a joint venture to produce bipolar high-power semiconductors, concluding that their combined strengths won’t distort the market.
The Commission focused on the potential for the joint venture to close off supplies of bipolar high- and highest-power semiconductors. But it concluded that “the proposed concentration would not have such results” because a “sufficient” number of competitors will remain.
The joint venture will be active in the manufacture of bipolar high-power semiconductors, which are used for applications including electricity transmission and distribution systems. Infineon will transfer its activities in the field of bipolar high-power semiconductors to the joint venture. Siemens is not currently active in this field, but uses the products for its electricity transmission and distribution systems, as well as for frequency inverters.
