I do . . . fill out forms online. Frankly, I think this mechanism is safer than handing a hard copy to humans, who may do anything with it.
---
I don’t . . . buy from an online retailer unless I’ve done a little checking to verify they’re legitimate, like calling them.
---
Precautions I take . . . I have multiple e-mail accounts to separate client business from the contacts that come out of my public relations visibility. I also have double firewalls and full security suites on all my computer systems.
---
What still needs to be done . . .I think the biggest issue in terms of transaction security is trusting the merchant. When there’s a storefront, you at least have some hope of confronting them if a problem occurs — with the Internet, that’s gone. This is why I would rarely buy from someone I found by searching or through a search engine ad, eBay, etc.

I do . . . use online banking to check account balances or transactions. I’m not as concerned about the security of online banking, given the relatively recent measures taken by major institutions to prove their identity to me and reduce the phishing and spoofing threat.
---
I don’t . . . give out information requiring a Social Security number. I’m not sure there’s anything a provider could do to make me feel safe enough to provide such information. I also don’t like to sign up for memberships or site accounts. Instead, I prefer to carry out one-time transactions.
---
Precautions I take . . .My household and work desktop computers and laptops have always been Macs, which don’t suffer from network-based malware. These computers are all sitting behind a NAT router without open ports.
---
What still needs to be done . . . I believe it is safe enough. Both threats and countermeasures have progressed in the past few years.

I do . . . exercise caution when dealing with eBay. I was swindled by someone a few years ago who sent a forged check for a laptop I was selling, so I use anonymity features such as those provided by PayPal. I also research much more carefully the reputation of an online seller when using eBay.
---
I don’t . . .interlink merchants online. For example, my bank says that they can pull online invoices from my credit card company. I don’t do that. I don’t want to make it any easier for anyone who breaks into one system to see all the information from others.
---
10 tips for safe surfing: Precautions I take . . .
---
| 1. | Use separate accounts for financial information. “I log out of my computer and log in with a different username. Neither of these are privileged/administrator accounts. For example, I don’t use the same account I use for CNN.com to manage my bank, brokerage, etc.” |
---
| 2. | Clear your cookies. “When I log onto a merchant to buy something, I use a different browser with cookies cleared out.” |
---
| 3. | Disable JavaScript. “I don’t use Internet Explorer, so I don’t have to worry about ActiveX, but I also disable JavaScript most of the time.” |
---
| 4. | Watch out for SSL alerts. “I always investigate any SSL certificate problems. I never simply check “OK” when I get a browser certificate error. This is one of the most important bits of advice I can give users.” |
---
| 5. | Disable autofill for forms. Not doing so presents a potentially huge security risk. |
---
| 6. | Develop a password-management policy. “I have a set of passwords that I use based on the sensitivity of the information I’m giving the merchant. I don’t have separate passwords for each merchant, as I believe this would mean managing hundreds of passwords. I use a set of about 20 passwords that try and spread the risk while making it reasonably easy to manage.” |
---
| 7. | Don’t let browsers store your passwords. “I don’t let my browser store any password I care about, as it presents another risk.” |
---
| 8. | Don’t keep sensitive information on a laptop. “I keep all my sensitive information on a computer at home. To access it, I have to go through a VPN and additional layers of authentication.” |
---
| 9. | Encrypt all data on a laptop. “On my laptop, I keep all data — sensitive or not — especially e-mail, on an encrypted hard-disk partition. I also require a password to wake the laptop up from a screen saver timeout or sleep mode.” |
---
| 10. | Disable image retrieval and HTML display in e-mail clients. “I can select what Web pages I visit, but I can’t keep people from sending me malicious e-mail. Therefore, I don’t want my e-mail client to potentially control my browser.” |
---
What still needs to be done . . . Some aspects of security have gotten better, but the net effect of having so many people with so many poorly written Web applications is that there’s a greater risk out there in general.

I do . . . believe that threats have increased, but so too have the solutions aimed at identifying and countering online fraud. I think financial institutions are far more sophisticated than they were two years ago.
---
I don’t . . .feel the same about community-based online sites like eBay. They are becoming increasingly dangerous due to phishing. My usage of these sites has gone down considerably as I’d prefer to buy my online merchandise from a more reputable site like Amazon.com.
---
Precautions I take . . . I ensure that personal and/or client security tools are installed. I pay particular attention to antispyware tools to help prevent or simply disinfect compromised machines. I also warn friends and family about the standard attacks that can happen via e-mail and what to look out for.
---
What still needs to be done . . . We need to make trusted computing ubiquitous. We need to find a way to create irrefutably authenticated transactions that tie user, device and session together in a trusted manner.

I do . . . love shopping online. I even buy clothes online. The only risk I see is someone stealing my credit card information.
---
I don’t . . .believe that financial institutions need to include sensitive information with each transaction.
---
Precautions I take . . . I remind my friends and family that others can pretend to be someone they aren’t on the Internet. For instance, my brother was contacted via e-mail about a potential job. He couldn’t do it, so he recommended someone else. The e-mailer called her and said they had accidentally wired her another deposit along with hers and could she wire back the difference? Of course, there never was a deposit. They were obviously looking for someone who would just wire back the money as instructed.
---
What still needs to be done . . . Merchants, like me, need to be better protected. Consumers, to a large extent, are already taken care of. However, legitimate merchants operate mainly at their own risk.

I do . . . pay all my bills and balance my checking account online. I also trade stocks online. It’s quite safe if you use a good password . . . and have encrypted transactions. The risks are in viruses, worms and bad Web sites that send things into your computer.

I don’t . . .allow my family to connect to uncleared Web sites, open e-mail attachments unless they’re sure of the sender or click on an apparent Web address in an e-mail unless theyÕre sure of the sender.
---
Precautions I take . . .I use encryption for some files and am planning to use far more for my laptop. I insist that my family use proper security software including virus checking, spyware checking and firewalls. |
