Strong demand for big-screen LCD (liquid crystal display) TV panels has led LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd. to increase capacity at its factory in South Korea.
The factory in Paju, near South Korea’s border with North Korea, can currently handle up to 90,000 sheets of mother glass per month. The sheets measure 195 centimeters by 225 centimeters and several 42-inch or 47-inch LCD TV panels can be made from each sheet. LG.Philips LCD will increase capacity to 110,000 sheets per month, it said in a statement.
The expansion is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.
The company recently reported its fourth quarter financial results and said sales increased 3 percent during the period over the same period a year earlier. Sales were 3.1 trillion won (US$3.3 billion). About 48 percent of LG.Philips LCD’s sales came from its TV panel business while the remainder mainly came from LCD panels for desktop monitors and laptop computers.
