Everyone has different ideas about what works and what doesn’t. An interesting article from this week’s Best Products package is “Fave Raves,” where a handful of readers tell why they like a particular product.
First up is network administrator Mark Currence, who runs a network for PrintingForLess.com, an online print shop. He chose HP’s ProCurve LAN switches as his all-time favorite.
Currence says he values the switches for their scalability, robustness, high performance and low price. He also was impressed with the way HP handled a hardware problem, giving the remote company a replacement within 18 hours.
The company is already running 10Gbps in its network core, with 2Gbps trunks to the access layer. It also uses Power over Ethernet and VoIP.
Another favorite comes from Mark Odiorne, senior network systems manager at Scottish Re, a life reinsurance specialist. He chose Core Impact, which he describes as “a full-on penetration tester in a box with real-world exploit code.”
He says it’s easy to use and cheaper than using an outside consultant to find the vulnerabilities in your network.
One thing we tried to do with this story is encourage others to name their favorites in a forum. Sure, we have the best of our product tests, the surprise hits, and the fave raves.
