* Oracle attempts to boost its Unbreakable Linux strategy with a long list of customer testimonials

Oracle last week attempted to boost its Unbreakable Linux strategy with a long list of customer testimonials, touting the benefits of receiving both Oracle software and Red Hat Linux OS support from the database giant, as opposed to the said Linux vendor.

Yahoo; watch company Timex; Diebold; makers of voting machines and ATMs; and restaurant chain International House of Pancakes were among the half-dozen or so enterprises which gave public support to Oracle’s Unbreakable Linux strategy. Announced last fall, Unbreakable Linux is Oracle’s fork of the Red Hat Linux Enterprise server code, for which the company is offering its own enterprise-level support to former Red Hat/Oracle shops — at a fraction of the price of Red Hat’s own support fees. Oracle says its customers would be better served receiving technical support for Oracle applications and the Linux OS from one source, vs. two companies.

Red Hat warns users that this is a mistake, however. The Linux company has said it won’t be able to offer technical support to Red Hat customers if they abandon its support for Unbreakable Linux.

In press statements, Diebold Vice President of IT Sean Forrester said Oracle’s Linux support “gives us access to the comprehensive, integrated, enterprise-quality support we demand.” Yahoo Vice President of engineering operations Laurie Mann says the company “embraces innovative new technology such as Oracle’s enterprise-class Linux support and solutions.”

What do you say, other Red Hat/Oracle users? Are you ditching Red Hat’s Linux support, or are you skeptical of the Unbreakable Linux initiative. Send me your thoughts on this subject.
