Employers increasingly are looking online to find candidates and to check out potential hires. What does this mean for your online presence?
* Remember: Even your personal blog entries affect your professional image. “I’m not posting all my dirty laundry out there,” says network administrator and blogger Kent Altena. “I’m not discussing, ‘Hey, I had a fight with my wife last night.'”
* Don’t censor yourself too much. Nicholas Tang, a director at social-networking site Community Connect. and a blogger, tries to remember that his co-workers, his boss and recruiters may read his blog. However, “I try not to make myself overly aware,” he says. He and Altena say that if a potential employer decides not to hire you because of your writing about your hobbies, for example, it probably means the job wouldn’t have been a good fit in any case.
