What do Bill Leo, Greg Morrison and Scott Townsend have in common? These IT leaders say that networking outside their organization is critical.

As CIOs — Leo at Mercer Delta Consulting, Morrison at Cox Enterprises and Townsend at Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union — all three are members of AFCOm, an organization geared toward data-center managers, as well as other industry groups.

While Leo and Morrison focus on networking with other technology pros, Townsend immerses himself in the overall financial industry, trying to keep up-to-date on the latest in government compliance, records retention and other critical issues surrounding his core business. He says even if he can’t attend meetings, he thinks it’s important to be on the lists and have rights to the Web sites.

Morrison says: “Networking comes in a lot of different forms. Every time you show up at a cocktail event, it’s an opportunity to network.” In fact, he helped create a group of in Atlanta for CIOs to discuss important topics. “I make time for networking whether it be social or professional,” he says.
