* Alcatel unveils two extensions to its edge switch and router lines

Alcatel this week unveiled two extensions to its edge switch and router lines to expand the addressable market for those products.
Alcatel rolled out a 12-slot, 400Gbps version of its 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS), and a four-slot, 9Gbps version of the 7710 Service Router (SR), which was launched in March 2006.
The 12-slot 7450 ESS is an Ethernet/MPLS routing switch for video aggregation in service provider networks. The 12-slot 7450 ESS shares the same operating system and interfaces as the existing ESS line, Alcatel says.
The 7450 ESS, combined with the company’s 7750 SR, has helped Alcatel recently leapfrog Juniper and take share from Cisco in the IP aggregation edge routing market.
The four-slot version of the 7710 SR is targeted at businesses, and fixed and mobile service providers with smaller points of presence looking to extend carrier-class attributes to the furthest edges of the IP/MPLS network. The platform provides interface types ranging from DS-1 to Gigabit Ethernet.
With this addition, Alcatel’s SR product line now extends from 9Gbps to 400Gbps in capacity for routing applications across access, multi-service edge and core networks.
Both the 12-slot 7450 ESS and the four-slot 7710 SR are available now.
