Acer, the world’s fourth-largest PC vendor, says it won’t need to recall any notebook PCs for battery problems related to a Sony production glitch.
“We do not rely on Sony for batteries,” says Gianfranco Lanci, president of Acer, at an investors conference on Friday. For the small number of Acer laptops that do use Sony materials in their batteries, Acer’s battery-charging mechanism ensures the batteries will not have problems, he adds.
Sony’s battery woes started in August when Dell recalled 4.1 million laptop computer batteries due to a potential fire hazard caused by Sony-made lithium-ion battery cells damaged during production. Other companies soon followed Dell’s lead, including Apple Computer, Lenovo Group and Toshiba.
Earlier this week, Sony announced that the final replacement figure could reach around 9.6 million laptop batteries. Over 8.1 million batteries have been recalled since mid-August.
