* Wrapping up the recent discussion on VoIP macro trends

This week, we offer a summary and analysis of the month-long observations we’ve been covering on convergence and VoIP macro-trends (you can view the archive of the newsletters here). Our thanks to the companies, users and newsletter subscribers who have taken the time to share their views.

First, let’s start with the old news. When VoIP was first being deployed, many potential users were rightfully cautious about VoIP quality of service. However, we contend that QoS issues can be solved with proper planning and implementation in both hosted and premises-based environments.

Another initial concern was about VoIP security; this perceived problem can also be addressed with proper testing and precautions. As validation of our point, we’ve heard from many VoIP experts and users who have proven that QoS and security concerns should not stand in the way of VoIP deployments.

Second, on the business case for VoIP: real savings can be had by reducing the need for capital costs that include wiring (by using a single Ethernet connection) and for those who are willing to use a computer as their phone, this contributed to a saving of some $200 (or more) by eliminating the need to buy a desktop phone.

On the expense side, reduced moves/adds/changes still contribute to the business case, as does the reduced need for physical space in all locations because VoIP equipment can be deployed in a distributed architecture that does not depend on physical proximity. Finally, by using “bigger pipes” that offer QoS and support both voice and data traffic (instead of a spider web of smaller connections) physical connection costs can also be reduced because the per-bit price for “big pipes” is generally less than for “small pipes.”

In summary, VoIP QoS and security issues can be solved and the business case can provide some hard number savings.
