* Unisys' Open and Secure Integrated Solution
Unisys last week announced a lineup of enterprise application packages aimed at making open source software easier for large business IT groups to swallow and digest.
Unisys’ Open and Secure Integrated Solution (OASIS) offering wraps together many commonly-used open source operating system, database, application server and Web serving packages with support and consulting services for customers.
The OASIS offering breaks down into several areas, or Suites. These include:
* Database Server Suites, which provide migration, implementation and support for MySQL and PostgreSQL.
* Application Server Suites, which include services and software for moving off proprietary Java Enterprise Edition platforms to the open source JBoss platform. This offering also incorporates Unisys’ Application Defender software for additional security.
* Migration services, for moving applications off of Unix-based RISC processor servers to Linux-based Intel server hardware.
Unisys’ idea is that enterprises can save money on the upfront costs of Linux and open source software, but end up losing in the long run if implementations are botched, or if unsupported or inadequately supported systems go down, or cause security problems. It’s in the latter area – support and services – where Unisys says it can help.
Along with the OASIS offering, Unisys is targeting specific vertical markets for its open source software implementation. Financial services, government, communications, transportation, consumer and industrial products, and media are some of the vertical markets where Unisys says it has preconfigured and market-specific expertise in deploying open source. (For example, the company says its Airline Core Systems Solution – AirCore – offering involves an end-to-end airline reservation and departure control system.)
