The open-source EWMS project, which lives on Sourceforge.net, as well as its own Web site, is a compilation of several open source mail, security, anti-spam and other applications that work together and run on either CentOS Linux or Red Hat Linux servers. The Courier-IMAP package forms the base of the package, with basic IMAP and POP3 server functions. This package also supports the Maildir storage format, which provides a more crash-proof directory structure that’s easier to work with instead of NFS or other file directory structures, EWMS creators say.
For security and anti-spam features, the package includes MailScanner – an open source anti-virus and anti-spam filter for scanning outgoing e-mail message. The Apache Foundation’s SpamAssasin package is also included for good measure to identify known spam patterns and signatures. The GPL-based Clam Anti-virus software package is also a part of the EWMS offering; ClamAV provides virus scanning based on signatures, which are updated regularly via the Internet.
Mailbox interfaces are provided via the SquirrelMail package, yet another open-source project based on PHP, which provides an HTML-based interface for mailboxes, as well as address book, calendar and mail folder management.
