Qwest announced a network migration service for customers looking to replace frame relay and legacy data services with MPLS-based offerings.
The carrier’s project management offering for its iQ Networking enterprise VPN service is intended to make the transition to iQ Networking from legacy services less complicated and resource-intensive. It provides business customers with a manager for the daily tasks required before, during and through completion of the migration to iQ Private Port services.

Network World Senior Editor Denise Pappalardo reports that Alltel has completed the spin-off of its wireline local services division. The wireless division also merged with Valor Communications Group to form a new service provider focusing on rural markets called Windstream. Windstream is expected to have about 3.4 million lines across 16 states. Alltel in December announced plans to spin off its local division. At the time, the deal was valued at $9.1 billion.

The number of Chinese Internet users reached 123 million at the end of June, with two-thirds of them using broadband connections, IDG News Service reports. Citing data from the China Internet Network Information Center, IDG News Service states that the number of Chinese Internet users increased by 19.4% over the same period last year. China boasts the world’s second-largest Internet population, behind the United States. However, less than 10% of the country’s 1.3 billion population has Internet access, leaving plenty of room for continued growth.
