* Sentinel from Novell
endif; ?>Novell recently shipped the first version of Sentinel (now called Sentinel from Novell) since acquiring the product and its vendor, e-Security, last spring. At that time, Novell proclaimed that Sentinel would combine the benefits of Novell’s identity and systems management expertise with e-Security’s real-time event monitoring, response and reporting capabilities. The result would allow for a comprehensive view of user, network and application events necessary for, as Novell put it: “A more rigorous, predictable security and compliance monitoring program.”
At first glance, it appears that Novell has succeeded.
The new offering combines the security information and event management (SIEM) of the previous e-Security product with the identity and access management (IAM) functionality that Novell pioneered a dozen years ago with the introduction of eDirectory (then called NetWare Directory Services). The company feels that this new product enables customers to manage their compliance and security risks using a single, integrated audit infrastructure.
Sentinel from Novell integrates and monitors information and events from across an organization’s networked infrastructure, including data from identity and access management products and third-party systems and devices such as firewalls, routers, antivirus, asset discovery/inventory, configuration management, intrusion detection systems, mainframes, network devices, vulnerability scanners, load balancers and others. By incorporating information from across the entire network which can be presented in a single dashboard updated in real-time, you can benefit from a comprehensive, real-time view of activities associated with systems, devices and people, as well as respond to threats more effectively.
You all know that I rarely quote Novell spokespeople because I agree with them, but Reed Harrison, CTO of Novell compliance solutions, said, “When Novell acquired e-Security and included Sentinel into its security and identity management product portfolio, we committed to delivering a fully integrated version by the end of summer. We’ve accomplished that goal.” He’s right. Check it out.
