* Foundry Networks, Extreme Networks separately reveal new deployments
Foundry Networks and Extreme Networks both recently revealed new places where their LAN equipment will be used.
Foundry’s Power-over-Ethernet-enabled edge switches and network management system will be used by the Meskwaki Casino – which claims to be “the largest full service casino in the Midwest” to support a network upgrade.
The company’s FastIron GS Series is a line of compact PoE-capable edge switches. They support 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet to the desktop, and they’re field-upgradeable to support PoE across 48 ports, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
The casino will also use Foundry’s IronView Network Manager application and sFlow to monitor traffic. The sFlow capability is embedded in the switches and helps with security monitoring, without the need for additional sensors.
Casinos, of course, operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so uptime is a prime consideration, and Meskwaki says reliability of the Foundry gear was a factor in the decision to go with that.
Meanwhile, Extreme announced that yet again its equipment will make up the InteropNet show network, this time for Interop New York next week. Extreme says that this time it is bringing its 10 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities and support for secure multimedia applications.
Extreme says its software will be intelligent enough to scan all traffic flowing through the network. The company says its Sentriant Access Guard will be used in the network to test devices that attempt to log on. If connecting computers don’t have patches or file updates that are up to their standards, Extreme will point them to those resources. Sentriant will use a rules engine to protect the network from any attacks or virus outbreaks. And it will provide IPSec encryption at gigabit speeds to secure management traffic between the show’s network operations centers.
Plus, there will be support for PoE and Gigabit Ethernet on every port of the Summit 400 edge switches in the network.
