I have a wireless router hardwired to the desktop with Windows XP Pro. My Sony Win 2000 notebook has lost Internet capabilities. The network monitor on the Sony gives excellent connectivity sometimes, but even then I can’t access e-mail or surf. I get Error 0x800CCC0D with Outlook Express. At first I was going to try to uninstall and reinstall the programs, but then my Dell notebook (XP Pro) also stopped connecting wirelessly. Should I delete all my network settings on all machines and start fresh, or is there something else that I should try?

First, see if the Sony notebook gets an IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server info – in other words everything it needs in order to be able to communicate on the Internet. If you get an IP address, can you ping your own address? Try 127.0.0.1 from your machine, as well as the DHCP-assigned address. Try pinging the default gateway and other machines, making note of where you can’t ping.
If you don’t get an address, try disabling any type of software firewall that may be on the computer. Depending on how hard the firewall is locked down, it may not even allow the port traffic required for getting a DHCP-assigned address. Another thing to look at: Do you have the latest network card drivers for your wireless card? Is there a firmware update available for the electronics on the card? One or both of these may help get things working.
As strange as it may sound, try running an assortment of spyware detection programs such as A-squared, Adaware, and Spybot to mention a few. It is not unusual to get an IP address but have spyware interfere with accessing the Internet. It is also worthwhile deleting the networking configuration. Remove the network card and reboot the machine. Let the machine come up once without the network card installed and then repeat the installation process for the wireless card. Try a different wireless card as you either could have a bad card or some type of conflict between the wireless card and your laptop.
