How we tested the Uplogix Envoy network management appliance.

Our test environment consisted of six Cisco– and Juniper-routed Fast Ethernet subnet domains and a T-1 Internet connection. Our client and server platforms included Windows NT/98/XP/2000/2003, Unix (AIX and Solaris), Red Hat Linux 6.2 and Macintosh System 8.

Relational databases on the network were Oracle 8i, Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Windows 2000 and AIX shared files, while Internet Information Server, Netscape and Apache software served up Web pages.

An Agilent Advisor protocol analyzer let us eavesdrop on the network traffic.

In our tests, we primarily looked for the ability to manage the configurations of our routers and switches, as well as monitor the health of those devices. We expected Envoy to support most router and switch models, scale well and install easily.

We wanted Envoy to give us timely alerts, produce useful reports and be easy to use.
