Microsoft patches Windows, offers malware removal tool

On its first “patch Tuesday” in 2005, Microsoft offered patches for several serious Windows security holes and released a new tool that lets users remove malicious software from their PCs. Additionally, Microsoft said it now has a formal closed beta test program for testing security updates.

IBM retains patent crown, frees 500 patents for open source use

IBM received more U.S. patents than any other company in 2004, marking the 12th consecutive year Big Blue has topped the list of patent winners. To celebrate the occasion, IBM pledged to make available 500 of the software patents it holds to the open source community. This decision however, was greeted with cautious optimism by some of the open source developers it was intended to help.
