ADIC last week unveiled a tape library with double the capacity of its predecessor. The Scalar i2000 can scale from 100 to 3,492 tape cartridges for up to 2.8 petabytes capacity. It also now has hot swappable drives and new management software that reports on drive utilization. The product conforms to the Storage Management Initiative Specification, which allows it to be managed by a number of third-party tools. The Scalar i2000 starts at $63,400.
Neoscale last week introduced an appliance that lets organizations compress the information on their tape libraries and encrypt it for compliance purposes. The CryptoStor for Tape 700 is installed in the storage network between the Fibre Channel switch and the tape library. It is available with two or four Fibre Channel ports or two SCSI ports, and starts at $25,000.
The worldwide market for handheld devices experienced its third straight year of decline in 2004, according to IDC. “Consumers don’t see the need to invest $600 in a handheld device [such as a PDA] if a smart phone can do the same basic tasks,” says David Linsalata, an analyst in IDC’s Mobile Devices program. During 2004, 9.2 million units were shipped, down 13% from last year’s shipments of 10.6 million devices.
