Verizon is giving MCI until March 18 to consider a modified $8 billion bid from Qwest. MCI had already agreed to Verizon’s lower bid of $6.7 billion, but Qwest has appealed directly to MCI shareholders for consideration of its higher offer. Both Verizon and Qwest have slung mud at each other through the press, each claiming that an MCI marriage to the other would not be in the best interests of consumers or the industry.

Alcatel is buying metro Ethernet access equipment manufacturer Native Networks for $55 million. Alcatel is looking to strengthen its position in the markets for metro Ethernet and triple-play services. Alcatel and Native Networks started collaborating on Ethernet packet ring technology two years ago for aggregation of DSL, telephony, TV and Ethernet VPNs over a single optical network.
