* ScriptLogic releases Secure Copy Version 4
My friends at ScriptLogic are justly proud of the new release (Version 4) of their Secure Copy product, a tool to aid in the migration or upgrade of servers.
Secure Copy automates data replication between Windows NT/2000/2003 servers without agents or scripts while maintaining the NTFS file permissions and other security information associated with the data. It’s an indispensable tool for those who are migrating from NT4, consolidating file servers or moving to a network-attached storage (NAS) or storage-area network (SAN) environment.
Version 4 adds a new multi-threaded engine to maximize performance when executing copy jobs on large quantities of servers (or large numbers of copies on a small number of servers). In addition, Secure Copy 4.0 adds more granular level of control. It not only copies files and folders, but also migrates NTFS permissions, file shares, file share permissions, local users and groups, and compression settings.
ScriptLogic gives a few scenarios where users would benefit from using Secure Copy:
* Windows NT4 to Active Directory migration – Secure Copy 4.0 automates the hardest part of migration from NT4 to Windows 2000/2003 servers by correlating NT4 file security data to user and group accounts in the new Active Directory environment and, where necessary, creating user/group accounts in AD to correspond to local user/group accounts on the source server. This can save days or weeks of manual effort.
* Server consolidation on NAS or SAN – Organizations are increasingly consolidating files onto larger centralized storage systems, and the file permissions assigned to local users and groups need to be migrated correctly as part of this process. Unlike other migration solutions, Secure Copy can transfer the permissions of files and folders owned by many different users without costly and delay-prone manual intervention.
* Data replication – Secure Copy 4.0 speeds up the data replication process between locations or onto back-up servers as a preparation for disaster recovery, and ensures that security on backup file servers is identical to that on the primary file server.
