* MIR3 notification systems, phpBB update
In any company there’s always going to be a need to notify a group of people that something needs to be done, fixed, or have a meeting about. But just getting a message out is only half of the task, the other half being coordinating the responses.
MIR3 offers a Web-based notification system that can use text-to-voice telephone messages, e-mail, SMS, and pagers to send alerts to where two-way messaging is supported and correlates the responses.
There are three products in MIR3’s portfolio: inEnterprise, inTechCenter, and inAlertCenter, each targeting different functional objectives but all offering what the vendor describes as a “secure, role-based notification platform designed to integrate seamlessly into an organization’s enterprise communication infrastructure.”
The products support call bridging into call centers, emergency lines and conference calls and can find/follow recipients based on their chosen device and schedule. The suite also supports receipt confirmation of critical alerts by users; concurrent notification of IT employees, user constituencies and key customers and help with staff management via first response and round-robin notifications. The products also support real-time reporting and metrics for certification of IT group operational readiness and can be integrated with any Web-enabled enterprise application or database via Web Services API. These systems can be provided as hosted solutions or installed in-house as required.
These are powerful systems and MIR3 has some major clients in place. For any company that needs to be serious about emergency notification MIR3 offers solutions that are really impressive in their scope and sophistication.

UPDATE: Four issues ago, I wrote about a free open source bulletin board system called phpBB (see https://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/web/2005/0502web2.html). Reader Gene LeDuc wrote in with warning:
“I’ve looked into phpBB a couple of times, and each time I’ve turned away from it because of how often I see phpBB vulnerabilities reported on Bugtraq and other vulnerability reporting groups. Not only do they turn up with an alarming frequency, but the consequences are generally ‘run arbitrary code on server’. This code base needs a thorough going over so that all user input is sanitized before I’d recommend it to anyone. I’ve been seeing these alerts for at least a couple of years and I’m amazed that they are still popping up.”
Thanks Gene – I’d seen a couple of bug reports on phpBB but this is more serious than I was aware of. So be forewarned if you intend to use phpBB. Comments anyone?
