When it comes to storage, one standard prevails: the Storage Networking Industry Association’s Storage Management Initiative Specification. SMI-S. It comes to its preeminence as each year a greater proportion of enterprise storage moves away from direct connection to servers and onto the enterprise network. SMI-S enables centralized management of distributed storage assets.
SMI-S currently provides discovery of arrays, host bus adapters, fabrics and switches that are on a storage-area network. By year-end, industry watchers expect that the specification for network-attached storage will be available.
Beyond SMI-S, IT managers should know at least three other standards:
WMI, for Windows Management Instrumentation. A Microsoft-defined standard for use by software vendors that need to provide management instrumentation for Microsoft environments.
CIM , for Common Information Model. A Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF)
