August is turning out to be a nice, quiet month after the turmoil of July, when it seemed I spent more time on the road – at Catalyst, Open Source Conference, SCO Forum, and LinuxWorld – than in the office. It won’t last, though, as the always-busy fall conference schedule is soon to begin. There are two upcoming events I should remind you about now so that you can plan accordingly.
Unfortunately, the two overlap and I need to be at both.
The third annual Digital ID World is coming up Oct. 25-28 in Denver. This is the most consumer-oriented of the identity-management-focused events, resembling, say, PC Expo (call it “ID Expo,” maybe) rather than Catalyst. But it is fast becoming the biggest show in the identity space, and all the major players will be there, which is why it’s important for consumers to be there, too.
There’ll be lots of CxO-level speakers ready to deliver that “vision thing” in their messages, including VeriSign CEO Stratton Sclavos, RSA CEO Art Coviello, General Motors Information Systems & Services CTO Tony Scott, Oblix CEO Gordon Eubanks, and Burton Group CEO Jamie Lewis. There also will be lots of exhibitors, seminar sessions and all of the hoopla that normally surrounds a technology gathering. I’ve missed the first two shows, but I don’t intend to miss this one.

But on Tuesday, Oct. 26, I’ll be at San Francisco’s Moscone Center for the inaugural event of a different kind of conference. Tucked inside the annual gathering of the telecommunications industry sponsored by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA), the industry trade association for wireless communication, will be a day devoted to identity and mobile services.
CTIA’s “Wireless IT and Entertainment 2004” expo (https://www.wirelessit.com/) runs Oct. 25-27, but the tightly focused Mobile I.D. Services conference is one you should pay attention to.

The speakers here will be, for the most part, emphasizing what’s possible today through the meshing of identity management with mobile and wireless platforms. Speakers will be those on the front lines, designing and implementing identity management projects. They include Sara Gates, group manager for identity at Sun; Venkat Raghavan, manager of security products & IAD at IBM; Archie Reed, director of strategy for IAM at HP; David Rivas, CTO of Sun’s Consumer and Mobile Systems Group; Doug Simmons, principal consultant for directory and security strategies at the Burton Group; and many more. I know it’s a good lineup of speakers because I personally put it together.
Attending both shows is most likely not possible for you. I will be spending a lot of time at San Francisco’s airport between the 25th and the 28th – but I do think both events are that important. If I can put out the effort to be at both, surely you can find the time to go to at least one.
