As embedded Linux rolls into new markets, such as automotive computing systems (see previous newsletter), the open source operating system is also chugging right along in the telecom and carrier markets.
The latest advancement of embedded Linux as a telco platform was the release last week of a registered Linux distribution from TimeSys that complies with the Open Source Development Lab’s (OSDL) Carrier Grade Linux 2.0 specifications.
The OSDL is a vendor-neutral consortium that promotes the standardization, development and optimization of Linux for specific deployments, such as data centers and carrier networks.
The OSDL outlines specifications that a Linux distribution must meet in order to receive a Carrier Grade Linux 2.0 registration. The registration process certifies that a Linux distribution meets certain levels of performance, scalability, clustering support and fault-tolerance. These specifications are also set for the various platforms that Linux would run on in a carrier environment, such as PowerPC-based equipment, or CompactPCI “computer-on-a-card” systems. Members of the OSDL’s Carrier Grade Linux sub-group consist of Computer Associates, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Intel and NEC.
TimeSys is offering a Carrier Grade Linux 2.0-compliant TimeSys Linux distribution on Intel and PowerPC platforms, with a Linux kernel based on the 2.6 version. The operating system is being targeted as a server for carrier applications, such as telephony or network monitoring applications, as well as a real-time application in other industries such as manufacturing automation, defense and aerospace.
