What a packed year it has been for trade show news this year. Two of the networking industry’s major shows, N+I and Supercomm, both reported double-digit percentage growths in the number of attendees and exhibitors, while the more general shows Comdex and Cebit America were pulled. The cancellation of Comdex 2004 left a gap in this year’s show calendar, but it wasn’t a big void as Fall VON and CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2004 kept us networking wags busy. The cancellation of next year’s Cebit America is unlikely to be noticed as it has always stood in the shadow of the huge Cebit Hannover in March.
Some of the trade show highlights this year include:
* Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates using his keynote at the RSA Conference to propose Caller ID for e-mail to authenticate senders of e-mail messages.
* Organizers of Spring VON saying that VoIP needs the magic touch of Apple CEO Steve Jobs to make VoIP hip.
* Supercomm getting settled in its new digs in Chicago. Supercomm organizers said the show drew some 30,000 attendees – a 20% increase over Supercomm 2003.
* MCI President and CEO Michael Cappellas kicking off the opening day at N+I Las Vegas by presenting his vision of an all-IP future in which telephony will be embedded into desktops wtih full streaming audio and video. Unfortunately, his demonstration was overcome by a poor local network connection.
We look forward to what the trade show gods have in store for us in 2005. Opening the year will be the International Consumer Electronics show that fills up Las Vegas every January. In February, DEMO, the show that case studies emerging technologies and gadgets will celebrate its 15th year. The year peaks in the spring and summer months, with shows such as CTIA Wireless, Cebit 2005, N+I Las Vegas, and Supercomm scheduled on the calendar.

Oracle President Charles Phillips opened Oracle’s largest user show to date with a keynote address that avoided controversial topics like Oracle’s hostile bid for PeopleSoft and focused instead on a high level overview of Oracle’s vision for flexible, integrated IT systems.

Linux keeper, SpikeSource CEO talk up open source, 11/17/04
Accommodating large patch sets in Linux is expected to mean forking off of the 2.7 version of the platform to accommodate these changes, according to Andrew Morton, lead maintainer of the Linux kernel for Open Source Development Labs (OSDL).
