* A look at Hyperspace's HyperWeb and HyperTunnel
endif; ?>As we’ve been looking at Web content compression products recently, I thought today’s product – HyperWeb from Hyperspace Communications (see editorial links below) – would fit right in to our program.
Like the previous products we’ve looked at, HyperWeb runs on the same machine as the Web server (although it can also be run on a separate server if required). Where HyperWeb differs is that it can run on Windows 2000 and NT, Linux, AIX and Solaris, and supports Microsoft IIS (as either a separate service or as an ISAPI filter), Sun iPlanet, IBM WebSphere, BEA, Apache and most proxy servers.
HyperWeb acts as a proxy, dynamically compressing content as it is sent and decompressing it when received. If you want to add caching, you can use HyperWeb as a front end to any of the standard caching products.
Hyperspace claims performance improvements of “last-mile performance of Web-based applications, and heavily-trafficked Web and e-commerce sites by [up to] 500%”, a 90% reduction in bandwidth consumption, and a 50% reduction in Web server CPU utilization.
For Secure Sockets Layer configurations, Hyperspace offers HyperWeb SSL, which adds SSL encryption and decryption to the basic HyperWeb product.
Finally, Hyperspace has just announced HyperTunnel, which creates a multiplexed, streamed, compressed data exchange from a Web server to a HyperTunnel Client (installed on a client) or HyperTunnel Gateway (which supports multiple clients) over an optimized TCP/IP connection provided by Hyperspace’s HyperTCP technology.
As a way to optimize and manage performance when extending a corporate intranet to a remote office, HyperTunnel would be worth considering.
Pricing for HyperWeb and HyperTunnel starts at around $6,000, while HyperWeb SSL begins around $7,500.
