* MCI signs it up for metro deployment

Movaz has won a multi-year, non-exclusive deal with MCI to supply the carrier with its metro optical transport systems. Though terms were not disclosed, Movaz says the contract is “significant” and one of its largest with a North American carrier. MCI is currently deploying the equipment in six metro areas to tie enterprise buildings together in campus networks, and to consolidate equipment and reduce fiber requirements in the MCI metro core. Movaz’s RAY systems support MCI’s wavelength and Ethernet services, as well as FICON and ESCON storage-area network  applications, for enterprises. They also consolidate existing DWDM point-to-point links and SONET-based rings in the core.

Laurel Networks is readying an aggressive ramp up in sales by hiring a seasoned router sales executive as its CEO. Don Pyle was lured out of recent retirement to be Laurel’s leader as the young service edge router company vies for a piece of the current multiservice edge RFP action. Before “retiring” in mid-2002, Pyle spent six years at Juniper Networks as vice president of North American sales. Before that, Pyle was a regional manager at StrataCom prior to Cisco’s acquisition of the company in 1996. He has been a Laurel board member since the fall of 2003, and he succeeds Laurel co-founder and CEO Atul Bansal, who is now president and COO.

An apparent recovery in the market for metropolitan-area network gear came too late to save Coriolis Networks, a start-up maker of MSPPs that closed shop on Jan. 20. Another young Ethernet-over-SONET company, Appian Communications, has also missed the rebound and is in transition, according to a top executive. The executive says Appian has scaled back operations, put many things on hold and is “in the process of evaluating certain options.” Coriolis had four customers but was still struggling to sign up a large U.S. carrier when the board decided to shut the company down after it was unable to close a deal for fresh funding.
