* Career killing behavior to avoid
endif; ?>In the last newsletter installment, we heard how Americans’ feelings of job security are generally on the rise. But if you’re yearning to be unemployed so you’ll have time to perfect your golf swing, plan your wedding or just lounge on the beach, here’s what to do.
While surely few people need advice on how to lose a job, the tips I found online are funny and also serve as a useful reminder of career killing behavior to avoid. Here we go:
* Cowley College’s Career Services counsels co-eds on “10 Outstanding Ways to Lose a Job.” Go to https://www.cowley.edu/student/career/LOSER.HTMl for advice on how to be an irresponsible, lying gossip around the office.
* An intrepid writer from The Wave Magazine sets out to lose a job in three hours or less. Find out how he did at https://www.thewavemag.com/printarticle.php?articleid=21668
* George Gurney’s “Dear Headhunter” column at https://www.dearheadhunter.com/losejob.html outlines several acts that are likely to get you fired, such as repeatedly calling in sick on a Friday or Monday, confiding in your boss that you’re looking for a new position, or asking HR about your vacation and sick time payouts.
* The Web site for the book “Year to Success” (http://www.yeartosuccess.com) suggests taking these actions: don’t listen, do only the bare minimum, make excuses for everything, and other unattractive behaviors.
* Why worry about getting fired when you can blow your chances before you’re even offered the position? Go to https://www.diresta.com/direstaarticle4.asp for advice on how to ruin a phone interview. Tips include letting your young children record your answering machine greeting, chewing gum during a conversation and acting irritated with the company’s receptionist.
